A heart of gold; Margaret Dillon

October 30, 2021

Margaret Dillon – a heart of gold within the community – recently won ASB’s Good as Gold award. We all know Margaret, whether it is from sports games where she captures memories on her camera, or from the school kitchen where she prepares amazing kai for students, she is always positively involved in our community.

Pre-lockdown, Seven Sharp visited Margaret and told her that the community had nominated her for the award she has won. The segment aired last week, showcasing Margaret’s outstanding commitment to the community, which she has humbly practised for many years. Everyone asked about Margaret has only the highest commendations of her -Angela Massey explaining, “Lots of communities have their ‘Margarets’, but we’ve probably got the best one.”

Margaret has been a massive part of the Feed the Kids initiative at Raglan Area School -working hard to ensure that every student has something to eat so that they are ready to learn. Margaret explained, “I love what I do because our kids are our future. You know that they’re gonna go to class and they’re gonna concentrate on their mahi because they have had a bit of kai in their puku.” Feed the Kids is just one of the amazing ways Margaret volunteers to help others in the community.

Margaret is always out with her camera capturing moments for others and the ASB Good as Gold award finally ensured that Margaret has her moment captured. It was a tiny bit of appreciation for a person who has given so much for others. As Hilary Barry explained, “Margaret Dillion is a woman of heart and soul, putting the tamariki of her community at the forefront of everything she does.”
