Whaingaroa Youth Movement presents The Upside Down, our 18th annual dance theatre production

November 26, 2020

In 2020 we have found ourselves in an unfamiliar place.  We are stuck in The Upside Down and we need to find a way out.  We are called to – inaction, we join together in staying apart.  The strange has become the norm, we plan for the worst, Zoom in and Lockdown.

Is The Upside Down a result of how we consume and our lack of care and compassion for our planet and people?  We have been weaving the fabric of our techno-capitalist world since the industrial revolution and it has begun to unravel.

But we can be thankful for what unravels the world.  It can show us where we went wrong.

Let’s not go back to what we were, but chose another way where we live with more empathy and connectedness.  If we each take one thread and come back to the centre we can create a more beautiful world.

Whaingaroa Youth Movement are a group of almost 70 local children aged between 5-17 years.  “We are about being together; to dance, create and explore ideas collectively.  Our performance work is about who we are, where we live and how we see the world.”

Directed by Patti Mitchley with set design by Si Willisson.
