Art Exhibition: The Art of Surf

October 7, 2024

The Local Rag talks to Mark Frost of Bayleys Real Estate who has curated and organised the exhibition.

What inspired you to get involved in the Raglan Arts Weekend with a surfing focus and theme?

Bayleys sponsored last year and again this year, and while viewing various exhibitions I thought it would be cool to have a curation of surf focussed art because Raglan has a rich surf history derived from its world class surf breaks. With the arrival of surf culture in the 60s came art, music, and a vibrant energy which continues to thrive. This exhibition showcases the art and hand crafting of several Raglan surfboard shapers who are an intrinsic part of the surf culture today.

What was the response of the local shapers involved?

The shapers were keen to be on board. The boards have been custom made for this exhibition along with surf memorabilia from local artists. Many surfers view their boards, both new and old, as works of art, both on the wave and on the wall!

What is your personal connection to surfing?

I grew up surfing in Wellington amongst wind swept mush then started surfing in Raglan about 20 years ago when I moved to the city of the future. I moved to Raglan permanently about 12 years ago for the surf and the awesome coastal lifestyle. Everything from an outdoor/ water sports perspective is right on your doorstep.

Do you have a few interesting pieces of memorabilia yourself?

Yes, a few old boards, some old school photos of the area along with some OG NZ skate boards. I recently got into hobby horsing so am starting to collect some early memorabilia. I think hobby horse beach racing is Raglan’s next biggest sport.

Boards and memorabilia are available for purchase.
