Mood and Energy Boosting Herbs

The end of the year is hectic for many and most of us are looking forward to a well-deserved holiday. Luckily the herbal kingdom has provided us with a few herbs to help us through these periods.

Rhodiola

Is a well-known adaptogenic herb.   Adaptogens are substances that increase the body’s overall resistance and help to normalise bodily functions when under stress.   Rhodiola has been shown to improve mood, cognitive function and memory. Traditionally used in folk medicine to promote work endurance, increase longevity, reduce fatigue, depression and anxiety.

Cacao

The Central Americans have for centuries been using cacao to tonify and stimulate the nervous system as well as induce mood-altering states. More recently, researchers have discovered that cacao has powerful anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-depressant actions. The raw cacao, not the refined version, is naturally high in magnesium, chromium, iron and compounds which support the production of relaxing neurotransmitters. Add 1-2 teaspoons of raw cacao to a smoothie or make it into raw chocolate – great for an afternoon snack.  However, I don’t recommend eating cacao after dinner, as it’s stimulating effects might keep you awake.

Licorice

Licorice has an impressive list of well-documented uses and is probably one of the most over-looked of all herbal wonders. Among its many uses, licorice stands out as a powerful adrenal and nervous system tonic. It can help with anxiety, long-term stress, female hormone imbalances, as well as digestive and respiratory issues. Licorice can be drunk as a tea or is often included in herbal formulas.
